XFS issues
Morning All

I have a near line setup HP server with a Nexsan Satabeast(direct attached), created two vols of 12TB using LVM created one uber stripped vol with xfs file system, which is now not mounting and throwing out errors.  Happy days.

I am trying to xfs_repair which as been running for about 10hrs  and the first error I managed to catch was:

found candidate secondary superblock...
error reading superblock 35 -- seek to offset 14431053414400 failed
unable to verify superblock, continuing...

anybody had any success recovering a file system? or should I blow it away and start over as I have all data on tape.

Re: XFS issues
What version of xfs tools are you using?
If it's less than 3, upgrade.  The xfs_repair tool is massively different and uses far far less memory and runs way faster.
Some time ago I had to repair a 150TB (I think) XFS filesystem and that came back.  It took days on <3.0 and about 40 minutes >3.0

If it's less than 3, upgrade.  The xfs_repair tool is massively different and uses far far less memory and runs way faster.
Some time ago I had to repair a 150TB (I think) XFS filesystem and that came back.  It took days on <3.0 and about 40 minutes >3.0

Re: XFS issues
Just the usual xfs_repair with the ag_stride set to the number of AGs divided by the number of 'disks' so if you're across 2 LUNs then use xfs_info and divide the AG number by 2 (at least I'm pretty sure this is how I remember it).

Also (and again, this is from memory of doing it a couple of years ago) you can mount the filesystem once it's passed Stage/Phase 5 and it'll continue the repair in the background.

Is it swapping?  Where's the bottleneck?

Is it swapping? ?Where's the bottleneck?

Have a look at home much memory it's using, is it sticking anything in messages?

I had a similar problem with a never ending XFS repair, it was something to do with memory usage, and I got round it somehow.
I'll have a think and look through my mail archive and see if I can come back with what worked for me.

Cheers
Louis

Just the usual xfs_repair with the ag_stride set to the number of AGs divided by the number of 'disks' so if you're across 2 LUNs then use xfs_info and divide the AG number by 2 (at least I'm pretty sure this is how I remember it).

Also (and again, this is from memory of doing it a couple of years ago) you can mount the filesystem once it's passed Stage/Phase 5 and it'll continue the repair in the background.

Is it swapping?  Where's the bottleneck?

What version of xfs tools are you using?
If it's less than 3, upgrade.  The xfs_repair tool is massively different and uses far far less memory and runs way faster.
Some time ago I had to repair a 150TB (I think) XFS filesystem and that came back.  It took days on <3.0 and about 40 minutes >3.0

Morning Pete

Varied success here at Escape. Which flags did you use when creating the filesystem?

For broadcast you usually want a "dim" surround/viewing environment as opposed to total blackout for a film (movie theatre) scenario.

Out of interest, why neutral grey surface and not, say black velvet?  It seems to me you want something that is totally non-reflective, which would be black, or am I missing something?
