thanks Hitachi!

Thanks for the presentation and pizza @Arc Hitachi.

While monetizing data seems like the next thing in storage and the meta data intelligence was interesting,  the side conversation of optical backup to film was really cool.  8)  Still would like to know how many megs a foot they get.

Re: thanks Hitachi!

Sounds like madness to me ... guess this refers to http://journal.smpte.org/content/121/1/39.abstract (Applications of Data Storage on Cinematographic Film for Long-Term Preservation of Digital Productions). My SMPTE-ness doesn't extend to downloading the abstract. - cal@bluebolt On 29/06/12 15:09, greg whynott wrote: > ..., the side conversation of optical backup to film was really > cool. 8) Still would like to know how many megs a foot they get. > > -g To unsubscribe from the list send a blank e-mail to mailto:studiosysadmins-discuss-request@studiosysadmins.com?subject=unsubscribe

Re: thanks Hitachi!

Hi

Can you tell me more about who spoke about optical backup? – More optical archive - it is a method being used by major Hollywood studios and has been for some time.

Anyone interested can contact me offline – phil@oceana.com

Thanks

Re: thanks Hitachi!

It was a general conversation where no one in particular was leading it,  started during the pizza break.

tell us what you know,  I'd think most everyone here would have at least some amount of interest in it.  how many megabytes a foot do you get?  what does the filim look like,  bar-codes or QR-ish?  what filim stock is used and how much do the 'drives' cost?   how big is the unit?   15 or 30 amp?  8)

I think someone said FilmLight started it,  which makes sense.     And if i recall the catalyst was the gov wanted a long term archive of the Bin Lamer trials..

take care,
greg

I remember seeing a variation of this on the Arri stand years ago. Analogue + digital http://www.bitsave.ch/eng/products/products.html and some of the history http://mmspg.epfl.ch/files/content/sites/mmspl/files/shared/star2010/ppt/star2010_rosenthaler.pdf IBM Photo-Digital Storage System and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_1360 and then the variation on the optical archive http://www.group47.com/site/index.php/what-is-dots On 29 Jun 2012, at 20:34, greg whynott wrote: > It was a general conversation where no one in particular was leading it, started during the pizza break. > > tell us what you know, I'd think most everyone here would have at least some amount of interest in it. how many megabytes a foot do you get? what does the filim look like, bar-codes or QR-ish? what filim stock is used and how much do the 'drives' cost? how big is the unit? 15 or 30 amp? 8) > > I think someone said FilmLight started it, which makes sense. Re: thanks Hitachi!
We use to have a plasmon library the size of a double door fridge.
I believe it was 30gb per side. It had a nas head on top and that would deal with moving data to the media. It kept stub files on the nas that referenced the  data on the media. If it was not in the robot it would tell you what it needed . All in all waste of money and slow.
LTO much faster.
