Re: windows storage server

thanks for the feedback. sounds like spindles are the key issue and going with RAID5 will help performance as well. are there any calculators out there or formula's to use for performance/spindle ratio?

we're working on getting Tactic setup for managing our assets which means artists will work locally and only hit the network when they publish or pull new assets. QoS on the render farm is a good idea as well.

i'm waiting on some feedback from Sun on Lustre support options before going down the Backblaze route. I could see very quickly amassing a huge pool of data that has many single points of failure and on the flip side, with redundancy of say 2 of the beasts, data management becomes an issue.

Yep you would be hard pressed to make that work from a performance standpoint, unless your artists are mainly Photoshop etc. But if you had to...I would forget the RAID 6 and stick with RAID 5, get the artists to work locally wherever possible, and either render at night or if you have decent switching set up QoS to throttle back the renderfarm requests.

I had to support 15 Maya artists a few years back in a 'transition phase' that lasted 3 months! Used an IBM x445 and a single Xraid as DAS. Good times.

Agreed - It wouldn't work well and would be a disposable purchase.

This would actually be a good application for one of the BackBlaze boxes.

Once you get through this transition phase - the system would still be useful as a nearline backup or snapshot server of some sort.

With only 8 drives the load of 10 artists will grind your server to a hault never mind adding the 30 render nodes. You need to get your spindle count up if you want any kind of reliability.

Something like Raid6 with 8 drives to serve 10 artists and less than 30 render nodes, 4 GigE ports?

i need to bridge a storage gap in our IT transition right now and need a temporary solution that is leans more on safe than fast.

thanks
