RE: OFFTOPIC: BES

Hi.

I've been a BES admin for the past 5 years, and have setup a few BES's in my time. I attended an Exchange 2007 course last week and we touched a bit on the ActiveSync stuff. With this version on ActiveSync, it does rival the BES for functionality, (Push technology with email, GAL lookups, remote wipe of device, contacts and calendar sync, etc..) It's the BES policies that RIM has that Microsoft doesn't. The granularity you get with the BES policies is not available on the ActiveSync side yet, at least in Ex2007, I haven't looked at Exchange 2010 yet.

Also with BES, you get the ability to deploy apps, via the

On the flip side, ActiveSync is free, and the learning curve is far less with regards to Administration of it. Even your iphone user can login to their mailbox via OWA and send a remote wipe command to their device if they lose it. You can't do that in BES 4.1.x. Maybe 5.0?

So the constant question of which one is right for your company? It all depends on which device makes sense for your business. I wonder in Obama will switch?

I'm not the BES admin, but i sit by him. unfortunately i'm not at work today, home sick in bed...

from what i understand:

  1. device OS upgrade pushes.
  2. application policy (you can pick and choose which applications can be installed/used on the device)
  3. encryption
  4. integrates with websence or another web policy engine.
  5. password policy enforcement ( force users to use a password on device, and password strength rules)
  6. device backups

the big thing is the amount of control over the devices it offers, allowing you to enforce policy. i think that is the key reason for its existence.

This can be a separate thread, but I've always been curious, what else does BES offer? Corp policy be enforced thru Exchange, but does BES offer even more options for Corp policy? Looking at the cost of the addition hardware, BES, CAL's and additional skill set for I.T., what does that cost give us that Active Sync and Outlook cannot offer on their own?

BES does more than sync mail et.al, so i don't think active sync could replace it totally. corp policy enforcement for example.. it would be nice if using BES was an option, so you could swing either way. 8)

Exchange is a blessing when it comes to mobile devices and emailing from multiple computers....Active Sync is wicked for iPhone, Android and Winmo...If BlackBerry ever gets its shit together eventually Active Sync will replace BES.
