Hello folks,

It's time to upgrade all our workstations and render machines to the latest ones offered by Bell Computer since we rent from them. I'm going to install and test the workstations first, will deal with render machines in another email at another time. Currently I run Centos on our workstations, render machines and servers. I was thinking of trying a different Linux distro on the workstations and render machines in order to have the latest and greatest drivers, updates, etc.

What Linux distro would you recommend for the workstations? Or am I asking for trouble by choosing less stable but more updated distros over Centos which is the free version of RHEL which is more supported by software vendors? Will it be problematic to have Centos on the servers and different distros on the workstations and render machines?

Below is the workstation hardware specs:

Nehalem Xeon workstation (dual CPU sockets)

Dual quad-core Nehalem Xeon E5530 2.4GHz 64-bit CPU (total 8 CPU cores)
24gb DDR3 memory (4GB x 6, 12 DIMM slots total)
Intel 40GB SSD drive x 1 ---------------------------> will this be big enough for OS and sofware?

Seagate 500gb SATA II Enterprise drive x 1
nVidia Quadro FX3800 PCI Express video card
Intel S5520SC workstation mb
Intel SC5650WS workstation chassis with 1,000 watts power
Dual onboard Intel gigabit NIC

Onboard audio
