HI Guys,
Was wondering if anyone had any recommendation or experiance for/with Hardware and OS configs for Maya 2010 64 bit that can handle scenes w/ millions of polygons and texture mappings in the 2-4k
range. We'd also like to get photo real renders out of it and were wondering if you recommend V-Ray or mental ray or any other procedures or pipelines for photo real render from Maya. Thanks in Advance, Joshua

Photoreal: vray No other choice. Render speed (way faster and no flicker), quality and only requires the minimal amount of scripting. Mentalray can get close, just not the extra 10 percent. I just converted another company to vray. let me know if u have any questions, O. So Photo Real: V-Ray, I have that for 3ds max and I know 3ds max can handle more polygons than Maya. We're talking about 40 million polygons! I guess my next question is do I convince the producer it's better to run this project in 3ds max because of this fact,
the fact that I have a photo real render for it all ready and 3ds max supports unlimited command-line based rendering? Any other ammo I could use in this case would be super!

3ds Max may support unlimited CLI rendering, but V-Ray does not to my knowledge. V-Ray for Maya at least gives you 10 node licenses with each GUI license bought at $900ish.

40 million, in layers or straight? Like each 6 million poly object in its own layer. I just got done w a show which I rendered 7 million poly objects per layer, 6 X 4096 textures and w a huge 8k texture w displacement. Render times per frame : 3 min W gi , refl, etc 3dmax is more developed and slightly more optimized. However I m convinced its almost the same. The unlimited command line is a biggie won't deny that. Maya does give u, 10 render nodes per 1 workstation license. All depends how good people are with exporting etc. O Sent from my BlackBerry device on the Rogers Wireless Network From: Joshua White <joshw@imaginaryforces.com>

Sure, proxy. I'm talking about rendering objects in sep files / layers. Or doing 1 big render. With maya u can go beyond its display capacities w proxies, just have to use layers. Actually V-Ray for 3ds max does support unlimited rendering CLI, you should read the installation guide for 3ds max page 2 "Remember that the V-Ray license server must be running every time one uses the V-Ray renderer for setting up or rendering. This includes the render slaves for network rendering. Even though they do not require an individual license, they do require the license server to be running." Also I started this tread to get some input on Hardware configs can any one give me some of that information pleaseThanks, Joshua On Mar 5, 2010, at 12:07 PM, Douglas Meyer wrote:
