Re: wow my first earth quake!

This may be my only chance to say this to a list of this caliber, so I hope you will forgive me...

N00000BS!!

I've slept through earthquakes that small! ;P

That said, we are drilled on these basics from elementary school onwards around here:

  • Sturdy door frames and tables are the only valid forms of cover during an earthquake. Drop to the floor, duck under a good sturdy table or desk, grab its legs, and be prepared to go where it takes you. Never run around, use stairs, or go outside while the quake is in progress!

  • Stay as far away as possible from all glass and windows. The vibration and pressures on framing can cause windows to suddenly shatter.

  • Run fire-drill type procedures and run roll-call only after the quake is over, after any damage is done with, unless of course a fire starts mid-quake.

  • Inspect buildings for leaks and gas in the air right away. We have mandatory vibration shut-off valves on all the building intakes here in California, but even that doesn't prevent underground pipeline ruptures.

For this list in particular: this is why strong racks and floor bolts are so important. Make sure they're installed right the first time. Keep your equipment locked into their rails at all times -- they should only be unlocked and pulled out during active maintenance. I know the temptation of lazy extended hardware access.
