Re: for you network guys

Hey Greg,

You can get ethtools working on OSX via fink. I use fink to run a bunch of older X11 utilities that I can't run natively.

two other links that look like they would be useful to have around. They take the lldp/cdp info and threw a web page allow you to query/see where everything is.

I'm using it on Cisco and HP gear, mostly switches. I think this project covers CDP too. There is another lldpd project too, but it wouldn't compile on OS X as it was looking for ethtool libs which I believe are a linux only thing. It may be better for some as it supports most of the discovery protocals (CDP,FDP,SONMP(nortel),and EDP(extreme)). Since most gear and OS images support at least LLDP and CDP these days, it seemed enough. you can find it here: https://trac.luffy.cx/lldpd/

Next week i'm going to see if one of our windows developers can compile it. I'd like to see it running on all stations.

take care, greg

What kind of router are you using LLDP on?

IIRC, Foundry has 'fdp' (foundry discovery protocol), similar to cdp (cicso discovery protocol).

sure this is old news for most, but I've found this to be useful.

cisco has a layer 2 protocol that allows you to see end devices before line protocol comes up (typically IP) called CDP, LLDP is the open equivalent to it.

there is a project (one of a few i found) openlldp which will compile without issue on osx and linux (probably windows too).

anyway it allows you to see hosts on the other end of a link/port which can be useful when trying to answer the question "what is plugged into port 3/4 on that switch?". And you can do this without the other end being IP'd, or IP'd incorrectly, or misconfigured ( LACP to non LACP port for example). as long as the interface is up.

take care and have a great weekend, greg
