A common problem I see in this regard with any CalDav server is that if the user has a networked home directory and they login to both a Leopard and Snow Leopard machine, it appears that iCal formats have changed between versions and seem to get overwritten with unusable data (or some other trickery).  

I usually ask users to reboot and not login across Leopard and Snow Leopard machines.  This or something else magical seems to fix the issue as I am rarely called into action after the reboot.

Oh and it seems you don't even need to open iCal in order for this to happen.  There's something funky happening on login.
