I'll only answer the first question. Go with Zimbra. :) -- ![]() David Fix Senior Systems Administrator Mr. X Inc. 35 McCaul Street, Ste. #100 Toronto, ON M5T 1V7 T: (416) 595-6222, x 241 F: (416) 595-9122 E: davidf@mrxfx.com From: "Wes Anderson" <iquitous@comcast.net> To: discuss@studiosysadmins.com Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2010 10:06:36 PM Subject: [SSA-Discuss] Choosing a Directory Service OK, so I am in a new environment. The current backend is set up running on OpenLDAP primarily on CentOS. There is only one Windows server in the place, a 2003 SBS box acting as a domain controller and exchange server, but only for use of calendaring. Mail is on a Linux server using XM. File servers are all Linux. Clients are a mix nearly 50/50 of MacOSX (Snow Leopard) and Windows XP. So... here are my questions to be answered, or rather where I want to listen to suggestions or thoughts on what ways to go for setup, troubles, tricks and suggestions. 1) In this environment what would you suggest for a single system to handle both calendaring and mail? 2) What would you suggest for Directory Services. Currently things are very silo based. Accounts need created for Authentication in LDAP, on one file server for NIS backwards stuff and on Windows for Calendar, then VPN, HelpDesk, Project Management, and Filemaker. We would like to set up some sort of single sign on system, but are trying to decide whose basket to place the eggs to be the master for maintain accounts from which all others could get their info? I think those are big enough for now, though I am going to ask more later. I, and the team have their ideas on what we want to do already for this system moving forward, but I love to hear all your thoughts in case there are things we had not thought of... Which does bring me to: 3) I want to start some sort of Network storage where we can store VM's moving forward as we shift from the old system to a new virtualized one. Suggestions on something we can start small with, and grow on, and what VM system do you prefer, VMWare? Zen?
