Hello,
What environmental sensors are people using in server/data rooms to
monitor temp/humidity? I'm looking for suggestions to monitor 3
distinct rooms with multiple notification routes.
Best,

APC NetBotz line is very good.
The sensors are not cheap but they are very good.
The IT watchdogs stuff is neat (sensors are cheaper) as well though I have one sitting here that I can't revive. :(

WeatherGoose here as well, also at a previous job. Works well, cheaper
(when you count time) than trying to build it yourself.

If you want cheap-and-easy and care more about temperature than humidity, Munin can be set to send out emails (and, if you know the right email address for your cellphone provider, text messages) when hard drive temperatures cross a certain boundary.
You could probably do the same with Nagios, or even a simple cron job using smartctl.
I've had it come in handy once already when a power bump knocked out the air conditioning but not the servers.

Hi All.
Anyone care to comment on the sensor info I'm collecting?
Thanks!
Temperature Monitors
simple usb devices:
midrange products
enterprise grade solutions:
big tits award:
most expensive award: APC NetBotz Rack Monitor 550 ($2000)
open source projects:
additional notes: there are standing thermometer/humidity sensors that are non automated dials. When you suspect hot spot, put a unit there and get a visual check on it in a minute or less.
often, you can pull data off our AC units as well.
You should be looking for humidity between 40% and 55%. If the room is too dry static electricity can be a problem. Too wet and your drives will rust in place.

I've used ITWatch Dogs.
Does the job, ugly interface but I throw its output into Cacti graphs so its fine.
Supports self signed SSL.
Both the sound, light and temp sensors are very accurate.
If I had to do all over again, I would probably go for a more integrated solution with remote power cycle via out of band RJ11 (POTS).
The IT Watch Dogs came out with a cool little book which I got free several moons ago. It turned me on to monitoring physical env and is a good read if you can find it.

+1 for IT Watchdogs. Weather Goose II is a great product and we had a full
solution for our needs for under $500. Don't use the graphs too much, our
external NMS does that instead, but the notifications are a life saver.

+1 for IT Watchdogs. Weather Goose II is a great product and we had a full
solution for our needs for under $500. Don't use the graphs too much, our
external NMS does that instead, but the notifications are a life saver.

Although I haven't used these specific sensors, but have been quite
impressed with digi's other the zigbee products for wireless serial
mesh building.
http://www.digi.com/products/wireless-modems-peripherals/wireless-range-extenders-peripherals/xbee-sensors.jsp#overview
At one point they also had ones that were standard plug form factor
for mesh extension with a light and temp sensor on them.
Might be worth a look, although I have no idea what pricing is.

May I recommend Sensors from Jacarta (These may be rebadged AKCP?).
http://www.jacarta.com/Home.aspx
OpenNMS is relatively easy to setup to retrieve the status via SNMP and
act accordingly on it.
I.E. over temp, flapping control (quick peak & trough around alert temp
- you don't want an alert every 5 secs)
You can them use a serial / USB GSM modem and send text alerts to your
mobile for out of hours using SMSTools.
http://smstools3.kekekasvi.com/
You can even then write a text acceptance handler than shuts down
defined kit in your MCR(s) when you send a text message back to the
modem (with obvious passwords and defined sender mobile numbers etc.)
Alleviating aircon issues from the any geographical location, why yes -
indeed you can.

We've used AVTech and have been very happy. The flash graphing is nice
but I wish that had a mobile friendly solution.

I've used ITWatch Dogs.
Does the job, ugly interface but I throw its output into Cacti graphs so
its fine.
Supports self signed SSL.
Both the sound, light and temp sensors are very accurate.
If I had to do all over again, I would probably go for a more integrated
solution with remote power cycle via out of band RJ11 (POTS).
The IT Watch Dogs came out with a cool little book which I got free
several moons ago. It turned me on to monitoring physical env and is a
good read if you can find it.

We use the Sensatronics E4 and EM1. The screw terminals are a pain, but the boxes are reliable and reasonably priced. Info is accessed via HTTP and SNMP.
