Overview

The Network/Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of networking, security, storage, OTT, and file-based video processing systems and equipment as may be applicable to the facility in which they are based, as well as the configuration and support of external processing systems including services hosted in other Encompass facilities and in the Public Cloud. Equipment encountered in this position includes, but is not limited to, servers, network switches, firewalls, fibre interfaces, storage arrays, and other ancillary equipment. Additionally, the Network/Systems Engineer will need to work with locally and remotely hosted software applications including encoding, transcoding, packaging, and VOD creation software, as well as Encompass internal software applications including Gateway and the QC Application.

Role Responsibilities

The Network/Systems Engineer will, under the guidance and direction of their designated manager, perform the following duties with respect to the company operated digital systems.

  • Design and implement broad scope digital video delivery solutions
  • Design and implement networking and systems infrastructure supporting both broadcast and digital video delivery solutions, including live and on-demand (VOD) products
  • Undertake corrective maintenance as necessary to restore any failed equipment to full working order
  • Undertake preventative maintenance to ensure the digital systems are fully operational 24x7
  • Liaise with third party vendors (e.g. equipment vendors and software providers) during fault resolution and new platform evaluations
  • Maintain detailed documentation and drawings as required to address growth and maintenance activities
  • Provide users and clients with professional, courteous, and timely technical support
  • Participate in rotating on-call shifts to provide 24x7 digital engineering support
  • Other digital engineering duties as may be assigned by the line manager or engineering management

Required Experience

  • 5+ years of networking experience
  • 2+ years of systems administration (RHEL/CentOS preferred)
  • Multicast network design and troubleshooting (PIM, IGMP experience)
  • Large broad scope project experience
  • BGP, OSPF, IPv4 and IPv6, STP
  • DNS, NTP, SNMP
  • MPEG-TS, HLS
  • Cisco L3 switches (Catalyst or Nexus)
  • Cisco ASA or PIX firewalls and Cisco ACLs

Preferred Experience

  • IP video grooming
  • Dynamic DNS (with BIND9)
  • CDN solutions
  • HLS and DASH packaging
  • ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash (supplanted by Beats), and Kibana)
  • nginx, haproxy, keepalived
  • ffmpeg and mediainfo
  • VOD metadata grooming (CableLabs ADIv1.1)
  • XML and JSON manipulation
  • Bash scripting
  • Perl or Python scripting (Perl preferred)

Skills, Education and/or Certifications Required

The candidate should have the following skills and qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. electronic engineering or software development) would be preferred
  • Technical knowledge of IP networking including a CCNA Routing and Switching qualification
  • and/or
  • Technical knowledge of file-based video processing systems such as Vantage or Carbon Coder
  • and/or
  • Technical knowledge of streaming technologies such as MPEG-DASH, HLS, and RTMP and of interfacing to a CDN
  • and/or
  • Technical knowledge of setting up and configuring servers (Windows and Linux) and storage systems (SAN and NAS)
  • Proficiency in basic office applications
