Members of StudioSysAdmins are invited to attend a special presentation from the creator of xCAT - Egan Ford. Egan has worked for IBM for over 13 years and has worked with many studios and companies helping them overcome hurtles in the area of high performance computing (HPC).  Egan has also worked closely with Linus Torvald over the years working on new features of the Linux kernel. During this meeting Egan will be giving an overveiw of new functions/features of xCAT 2.0 followed by an informal open discussion. All Members are welcome to attend.

Ocarina Networks will also give us a generic presentation on compression and deduplication as well as their plans for end-to-end optimization - Presented by Goutham Rao - CTO.

Goutham Rao is responsible for algorithmic research and design, architectural guidance, and technology vision at Ocarina. He has an MS Computer Sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to Ocarina he was the CTO of Net 6 and joined Citrix via the acquisition. Goutham has worked as an open source Linux kernel developer AND a key Operating Systems Architect at Intel where he worked on the IA-64 project. At Intel, Goutham worked on various UNIX Kernels, and in particular designed and implemented some key components of Linux's Intel 64-bit architecture.

Please join us for our second StudioSysAdmins meeting in the Vancouver area which is graciously being sponsored by Seven Group.   The main topic of this meeting will be about High Density Computing with speakers from SGI/Rackable who will describe the solutions that they have helped design for clients such as Google and YouTube as well as introduce us to their latest technology UltraViolet.

At the Supercomputing 2009 show (November 16th), SGI unveiled what officials are calling the fastest and most scalable shared-memory system. Powered by Intel's upcoming "Nehalem EX" Xeon processors, the Altix UV can scale from 32 to 2,048 processing cores and can support up to 16 terabytes of shared memory in a single image, all within four server racks.

The next StudioSysAdmins meeting for the Toronto chapter will be held on Thursday November 12th, 2009.

It has been over a year since the first meeting in Toronto which started it all.  We would like to have a brief update on what people think of the group so far and the direction/goals you would like to see for the future. We will also be joined by David DeCastro (presenting), Mike Glover and Dan Hobson from IBM who will be giving us a presentation on cost,  space and power savings with their new IBM iDataplex offering, as well as, the new HS22 Blade.

The next StudioSysAdmins meeting for the Toronto chapter will be held on Tuesday July 28th, 2009.

Chris Pariaug and Ron Lokiasingh from Syncron Cyberkare, along with Mike Brewer from Pillar Data Systems will give us a brief introduction of their companies along with a presentation centered on Quality of Service (QoS) and multi-tiered storage properties of the Axiom storage subsystem.  We will also be talking about performance issues in a heterogeneous storage pool, including SSDs and the reliability and availability aspects of pooled storage. As an extra bonus, Tom Burns from Technicolor will be showing us a few stereoscopic trailers in their DI Theatre.

In February we had our first StudioSysAdmins User Group Meeting in Los Angeles. We had a great turn out and feel that we are ready for our second meeting.  This second meeting  will be another opportunity to meet our peers and again discuss technical needs with the primary focus on Render Management (queuing). Troy Brooks, CEO, PipelineFX along with representatives from other render management software companies will be participating in this open discussion on the issues and needs of rendering in the Visual Effects Industry.
